And the winner was ...

John McCain and Barack Obama engaged in their first presidential debate last night, and I'm wondering what you think of their performances. The pundits on the left and right fringes, predictably, came out for their chosen candidates, but for the most part, the "experts" considered it a draw. I would tend to share that assessment. George Will, who is a conservative but also, in my mind, one of the more fair-minded political analysts, had this to say: "Is the race now different than it was at 9 p.m. eastern time? The answer, I think, is no. This wasn't a game changer." Agreed. After watching last night's debate, I doubt that anyone who went in as a supporter of Barack Obama was ready to shift to John McCain, and I doubt that any McCain backers were ready to abandon their candidate. Next up: Palin versus Biden. Should be fun.

I watched the first hour of the debate. I was eager to see what each fellow brought to the table. I don't watch television news, so anything I have on which to base my opinion of either candidate is from something I read. I wanted to see them talk.

I agree that neither one was so inspiring as to make one switch sides. I applaud Lehrer, too, for not letting them get too far off the subject and for trying to get them to interact. But after an hour, it all started to run together and it got boring. I turned it off.

I'll watch the next one, and I'll check out Biden and Palin. The VP debate might be the best of the lot, come to think of it.

I'd bet thursday's debate is off the charts, ratings-wise... Especially after Palin's interviews with gibson and couric.

I'd pay to see Biden & Palin wrestle in pudding. But only if Biden wears lipstick.

Toss a pig in the ring, too, with lipstick, of course.

I don't mean to be ignorant... well, maybe I do, since I don't stop...

But... I can see Palin becoming something of a pop-celebrity if the McCain/Palin ticket doesn't win... Maybe having a reality show or something that is basically trivial and stupid... and we will, collectively, look at the spectacle of it and say "Holy Pet Pageant Batman, we almost elected that!"

Any wagers on what the October Surprise will be this year?
