Idiot of the month

I realize it's only March 3, but I'm going to go ahead and predict that recent comments by former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum will be the most idiotic of the month. Marty Griffin of KDKA Radio played a tape of Santorum the other day on which Slick Rick expressed his hope that President Obama's efforts to revive the economy fail. That's correct. Santorum wants the country to descend into a major, crushing depression - an economic meltdown that will cause horrific pain and suffering to millions of people across this country - just so his party can get another chance to lead and impose its version of economic leadership. I'm really not surprised by Santorum's comments. He's always been an ideologue and a hatemonger. This is the guy, you might recall, who tried to link homosexuality with incest and sex with animals. He's also the guy who went on a grandstanding junket to Florida a few years ago to express his view that he and his Republican colleagues in Congress were better equipped than Terri Schiavo's husband to make decisions about her medical care. The man was an idiot then. He's an idiot now. And I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that he'll be an idiot in the future. It's a pretty safe bet.

Unless the Republicans break up their circular firing squad and quit kissing the ring of a certain corpulent radio host, they're going to stay in the wilderness. And saying they want President Obama to fail displays a certain kind of nihilism, as David Brooks of the NY Times pointed out last week after Obama's address to Congress.

Marty did an excellent job of taking an off-the-cuff remark made in a chaotic situation to build a bogus point.

Hook, line, sinker, all swallowed with ease in some circles.

Oh, so what you're saying is that the genius Santorum was somehow confused because there were people around him when he spoke? A chaotic situation? I think he was at some political dinner. It's not like he was aboard the Hindenburg as it plummeted toward the Earth. Quit apologizing for this guy. He said what he meant, and he meant what he said. He's a hateful horse's ass.

Add me to the list of those who hope Obama's plans fail. Why? Because the same reason Limbaugh and Santorum do.

I wish the man Obama nothing but the best, and hope he succeeds as our President. But, I am seeing his policies as ones that are wrong, ill-conceived, and heading our country in a wrong direction. And, there is no retreat, no opportunity for a do-over. The sooner some of these policies fail (see your objection to the stimulus money spent on the parking lot), and the quicker Pres Obama and Congress changes, the better off the US will be.

It is funny why there was no outrage when the Dems came out a year or so after the beginning of the Iraq war with the same message. They wanted the Iraq war to fail, so as to end the conflict soon, get out, and take another path. The media hardly mentioned their desire to have Bush's policy fail. But, now when somebody expresses concern about bad policy, wanting them to fail so that a change in direction can be implemented soon, we hear all kinds of expressions of 'how can they say that?'

I think it's pretty amusing the way the Republicans slashed taxes on the well-heeled in the Bush years, made the Iraq war an off-budget expense handled through supplementals, and let the deficit explode (after all, it was Dick Cheney who said, "Deficits don't matter"), and now they've suddenly decided it's time to shut the pocketbook.

It makes perfect sense -- when businesses aren't spending, consumers are hoarding their pennies and the economy is going under, Federal spending is about the only opportunity you've got to goose the economy. And a good chunk of the stimulus is going for infrastructure projects that will strengthen the economy in the long term.

I don't recall Democrats saying that they wanted the Iraq war to fail -- they just observed that it WAS failing. The unintentional brilliance of Bushie (don't often see Bush and brilliance in the same sentence) was in getting us entangled with no way to get out. Anyone rememeber Vietnam and how long we languished there for fear of the dominoes falling? What Iraq has really cost us is yet to be determined, but I'll remind everyone that the Russians self-destructed not long after failing to "win" in Afghanistan.

To the post about not hearing Democrats wanting the Iraq war to fail:

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123610420858420725.html

Other articles in the WSJ said the same thing.

The principle was the same thing -- wanting the war policy to fail so that a different course could be followed. It is the same thing as Brant said in his other blog about the parking lot -- hoping the policy of providing these funds to fail, because this is a wrong path to take. Those who bothered to listen, and not read into the what was said have made their own bone to pick, albeit erroneous. It is the same bone that was picked on the Bush Administration for years. Maybe some people were not listening very well during those years.

+1 on the Obama stimulus plan to fail, and may it be quickly. This course of action is not a good one.

We all should want every war to fail -- maybe then we'd see the futility of them. But wanting Obama's plan to fail is like hoping your mother gets cancer so she becomes closer to god.

So we should have hoped for failure in WWII? This is the type of dangerous beliefs that George Orwell (an avowed leftist) stated were wrong. He understood that it is easy to condemn the problems of western republics and democracies while protected by their freedoms.
As always I would tell you to stand up for your beliefs, go to a synagogue and tell some holocaust survivors that.
There is good and evil and the world is not always grey.
The fact that you are against the use of force does not stop another from using to take everything you hold dear from you.
Wishing for this nation to have failed in Iraq was a wrong as it is for those in the Republican party to wish to this nation to fail economically.

An Honest Leftist
"You're damn right I wanted the Iraq war to fail."

* Article

By JAMES TARANTO

Best of the Tube Tomorrow Morning
We're scheduled to appear on a "Fox and Friends" political panel tomorrow at around 7:15 a.m. ET. If you're an extremely early riser, or a West Coast insomniac, tune in and see us on the Fox News Channel.

An Honest Leftist
Back when George W. Bush was president, this column would occasionally observe that many on the Democratic left were hoping that America would lose the Iraq war. This seemed to us an obvious observation, but it never failed to scandalize our loyal left-wing readership. But a Lee Stranahan, writing on the Puffington Host, admits it: "You're damn right I wanted the Iraq war to fail."

Well, two cheers to Stranahan for his honesty. (We'll explain below why we're withholding the third cheer.) What makes this acknowledgment even better is that Stranahan offers it in the course of defending the good faith of a man who, now that Bush is an ex-president, is the left's favorite demon figure, Rush Limbaugh.

Brant honestly I met lots of Obama supporters here locally that wanted us to fail in the war. They also were unwilling to look at any success that happened in the field or in changing Iraq.
It was sad to say the least. I am a conservative Republican but I want our NATION to succeed even when I disagree with the policy. I hope the economy improves soon.

To Anon, the listening has been selective. To think there were none publicly saying they wanted Iraq war to fail is to not listen to what was being said. When the surge was working, suddenly those detractors had nothing to say. Now that fatality rate has dwindled, we hear nothing about the changes in progress.

To say "hoping for failure" is not a knock against Pres Obama. For many of us, we see the recent legislation as bad for America, and want to take another path. How to take another path, have the present one fail. The response seems to provide only a basis for name-calling. What does name-calling gain?

The problem is, no one seems to recognize the consequences of having the current plan fail. I'm not a big fan of the corporate bailouts and the stimulus plan, but I'm sure hoping that they have a positive effect, sooner rather than later, because a lot of good people are suffering greatly right now, and if the stimulus efforts fail, millions more will be joining them. I couldn't give less of a crap whether some high-flying millionaire who lost his ass in a Ponzi scheme decides to take a dive off a tall building, but I do care about average people who want nothing more than a good job. Also, people didn't have to wish for the original occupation plan in Iraq to fail. It was doomed to failure. I was thankful that the surge worked, because it eventually reduced our casualties in Iraq. I remain convinced, however, that dreams of long-term democracy in Iraq, without our heavy military hand involved, is a pipe dream. My sister's boy did two tours in Iraq. I'm just glad he came back safely and that his life wasn't sacrificed in an unnecessary war.

Unfortunately, the plan over the last 40 years appears to have been to have no plan and let coming generations deal with the bloody mess we created by ignoring reality. So now that the current generation is attempting to do something, everyone else suddenly has a better plan? Let's hear it. Even more unfortunately, we can't try one plan for a year, then try something else. Wishing our economic woes would be cured overnight is just one more symptom of our need for immediate gratification.

Here is some additional information regarding the issue-

Compilation of some other poll results from around the same period as the Garden State Poll:

And here is a Free Republic article on the Garden State poll:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2202005/posts

One notable passage in that one:
"In other words, the rage extends way beyond the lip-pierced Deaniacs, aging hippies and other fringes of the Democratic Party. Lots of otherwise sensible people - suburban moms, hospital orderlies, schoolteachers, big-hatted church ladies - detest George W. Bush."

The GOP needs to also clean house and start fresh with new, intelligent faces with real experience and less baggage. Is that an oxymoron? Palin does not count as fresh and intelligent. Have they learned nothing from the past 8 years and election?
