No Rush

It didn’t take long for a group trying to buy the St. Louis Rams to figure out that they’d be better off without the participation of radio talk host Rush Limbaugh. Limbaugh was to be a limited partner in a group led by Dave Checketts, chairman of the St. Louis Blues hockey team, but his presence attracted opposition from some NFL players, and at least one owner and the NFL commissioner made it clear they were rather cool to the idea of Limbaugh being connected with the league. Al Sharpton, who never saw a light on a TV camera without running toward it, also decried Limbaugh's bid, but who really cares what Sharpton says. Limbaugh, predictably, said the opposition to his involvement "is about the ongoing effort by the left in this country, wherever you find them, in the media, the Democrat Party, or wherever, to destroy conservatism, to prevent the mainstreaming of anyone who is prominent as a conservative." As if often the case, Limbaugh is lying. His talk show and the conservative Fox News are hugely popular in this country. The problem isn’t that Limbaugh is a conservative. It's that he's a horse's behind. There's an old saying to the effect that when you make your bed, you have to lie in it. In Limbaugh's case, that means that when you‘re a divisive, polarizing racist, sometimes it comes back to bite you.

I was with you till the racist part...why did you need to call him a racist? It negates the good points made.

I called him a racist because he clearly is a racist. But I also think Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are racists. They come in all colors.

Clearly a racist? Wow.
That is a bold statement to make with no proof.

Let's remember, this is the guy who said Donovan McNabb was being overrated because the media wanted to see a black guy do well, and compared NFL players to Crips and Bloods. He has a history of making comments that are demeaning to black people. Sounds racist to me.

Limbaugh often makes these statements tongue-in-cheek. And they are often taken out of that context.
But he would not have been good for the league unless he was willing to give up his talk show. Since that is his biggest source of income - I'm assuming here - that likely wouldn't have happened.
I don't see how he would have been much worse than Jerry Jones, who actually shows up at games in makeup for when the TV cameras are on him.
Plus, he would have been a very small minority owner. Serena Williams is now a minority owner of the Miami Dolphins. Hell, she threatened to kill a linesman a few weeks back.
Where's the outrage over that from Rev. Sharpton and company?

Maybe it's just me, but it seems as if the Rev. Sharpton spends a lot of his time conjuring up controversies when a white person commits a perceived misdeed but doesn't pay a lot of attention to misdeeds committed by black folks. As I've said before, all you need to do to get a picture of Al Sharpton's honesty and integrity is to study up on the Tawana Brawley case.

No need to psychoanalyze him -- Limbaugh is simply an ass. He has plenty of company, but better access to the airwaves.

Many of the Hollywood types continue to make outrageous comments about political matters, calling names, and denigrating America. Yet, when they step up with their millions of dollars to buy something, nobody gets excited or even makes notice. Clearly, this is a case of the knife cutting only one way.

Can somebody say GROUP THINK. The ball got rolling with one person, then the player's union picked up, got some players to talk, then the agitators chimed in, and it became cool to speak negatively. Funny -- those who speak so loudly about being tolerant, bring their own version of tolerance to the discussion. Hypocrisy at its finest.

You'll have to pardon me for not having more patience for lying, racist hatemongers who pander to the lowest common denominator of our society. Sorry.

But Brant even though I find Limbaugh and his supporters a problem for my party, I do believe that the poster before you has a valid point. If Danny Glover wanted to be a part owner in a NFL franchise there would be no outrage. Even though he has denigrated this nation and supported dictators overseas. This is a problem because it enables the supporters of Limbaugh's ilk to have a legitimate rallying cry. It also makes it harder for conservatives that find his message reprehensible to speak against him because the left and the mainstream media will not speak against such individuals.

I think one difference may be that liberals, by and large, don't give a damn what Danny Glover or Sean Penn or Alec Baldwin or Barbra Streisand think about anything, but there are vast numbers of Republicans who follow Limbaugh and Beck and Savage like lemmings. That's evident by looking on blogs and forums where you see people regurgitating what they heard from the talking heads that day.

Brant, if you call Limbaugh's views regurgitating why is it that he has millions of listeners on 500 radio stations?

How do you compare Maddow, Olberman, Matthews insofar as the regurgitating category?

Please read carefully, Osama. What I said was that Limbaugh's LISTENERS regurgitate what they hear him say on the radio. I never questioned his following. There are, indeed, millions of Dittoheads in this country who are willing to let Limbaugh, Beck, Savage and the like do their thinking for them.

I never listen to Limbaugh, Beck, or others mentioned here. I don't know much about what they are espousing.

Every one of them has a right to spend their money as they see fit. The outcry against Limbaugh in this situation is highly inconsistent with the liberal assertion, "Their private views and positions should have no bearing on how they do their job." The outcry of the likes of Sharpton, Jackson, and some of the NFL players exposes them for their inconsistency. Because some of these folks don't like Limbaugh's political views, they don't like the color of his money either. This is a sad commentary coming from the NFL owners (rolling in cash), and the NFL players (rolling in cash -- average, $5M(?) a year). Ha, ha, ... surely you NFL owners and players jest!

Another instance where others want to tell some somebody else how to spend (or not spend) their money. It happens in DC every day, and has worked its way into our culture. It would be funny, because many of those telling others how to spend (not spend) their money cannot manage their own finances. That really makes their comments sad.

If what Limbaugh said is correct that doesn't make him racist. Furthermore his speech should be protected by the first amendment.

Anyone else think this was just a major publicity stunt by Limbaugh to boost his radio ratings? I mean, he started ranting about Obama's America and liberals screwing him over five minutes after he's dropped from the potential ownership group.

This is a big non-issue, in my opinion.

It's a game! Kinda like if there wasn't a Carter there wouldn't have been a Reagan game.

I think most people I meet are pretty much moderates. They don't like to be called a fence sitter's so they either lean a little to the left or right.

Moderates are the people that keep America moving. People like most of us on here. We get up work 12 hrs a day atleast 5 days a week, pay our taxes and hope we can catch a dinner with our families 3 times a week. Who has time to keep with those better then us in Washington D.C. crowd?

Well I think people are really starting to wake up and ask "where did all our riches go?" Then asking their elected officals to do the right thing, and get ignored time after time. 2010 elections are going to tell a lot about the majorities political standings in America.

Sad thing is, it's going to be loud. Like a far left carter got us a far right reagan. Carter being Garofalo and her liberal hollywood friends (who don't work and think like most of us) or a Sarah Palin and Rush type (and Their christian right groups, oil friends who also doesn't work and think like most of us).

Sad thing is, Rush wouldn't have a voice if he didn't have listeners. Most republicans I know don't listen to Rush. So he jabs at the left all day... and the left tune in to fight with him. Ratings go up. Just like Garofalo and Penn statements! If the right wouldn't tune into them and give them a voice of oppisition they wouldn't be heard! Cause all the dems I know are at work when they running their traps!

Do I like Rush, no. Do I listen to him, no. If he had the money, he should have the right to be voted on.

Our political system does indeed allow us the chance to "vote 'em all out" every couple of years. The problem is that the ones we vote in are very seldom any better. If we keep trying to make a 180 in the course of the country every four years, it doesn't take too much logic to see that we arrive at the same place every eight years. The sad fact is that America is less tolerant than it once was and the rich keep getting richer and have very little interests in what happens to the poor. We say that the churches and social agencies should be doing more, but we don't fund them. I firmly believe that unless we get president who starts a nuclear war and off all of us, the country will simply continue to struggle along with the rich having and the poor having not and the middle class trying to make out as best it can. It's too bad that life will eventually come back to basic survival.

What I find funny about the Limbaugh boot is that he is obviously too liberal for the conservative NFL owners. Or are all the owners part of the liberal movement?

Maybe some of his comments were made up, but the one about Donovan McNabb got him fired from ESPN. That wasn't made up and it was only a slight reference to the NFL being racist.

Sharpton and Jackson bozos. All three are nothing more than shameless self-promoters, period.

I don't listen to Rush Limbaugh so it made me wonder if what he's saying in the column is true or not. I looked it up on snopes.com and found this: http://www.snopes.com/politics/quotes/limbaugh.asp
