Can someone explain this to me?
We had a brief item in the paper today noting that state driver's license centers will be closed Monday for Columbus Day. While I've given up hope of state-run enterprises actually responding to the needs of the people - The state liquor store on Main Street isn't even open on Monday, but that's a whole other area of disgust for me - why in the world does anyone need to be off on Columbus Day? For one thing, Columbus never set food on the terra firma of North America. Leif Eriksson was here nearly 500 years earlier. Also, Columbus "discovered" absolutely nothing. You can't discover a place where people already have set up shop. I'm guessing it's another case of a union bargaining to get its people an additional paid day off, no matter how inconsequential it may be.

I don't know how old you are, Brant, but it's all part of the negotiation that in 1971 moved nine federal holidays to Mondays, austensibly to reduce Monday absenteeism among federal employees. Given that no one really "honors" anyone on any of the Monday holidays -- with the exception of Memorial Day and, Veterans Day -- I agree that it's goofy. "America" basically just got in the way of Columbus. We probably should be honoring Leif Erickson, not Cap'n Chris.
Columbus Day is irrelevant anyway - for the reasons Brant listed in particular, and also because no one really gives a crap about this sort of holiday anymore. Nor do they care about Presidents' Day, or dare I say it...Martin Luther King Day. Most people just consider it another day off (if they're eligible) and the rest consider it an inconvenience if the venues they need to avail themselves of fall into the category of "closed."
It appears we’re missing the bigger point of the photo. How does a state agency get away with not accepting cash for services? Does the phrase “THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL DEBTS, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE”, ring a bell?
