Really, Kanye?

Kanye West loves him some Kanye. That's the way he's always been. It's Kanye first, Kanye next and Kanye last. If he doesn't get an award he thinks he deserves, he acts like a 3-year-old. But Kanye's taking his self-love to the next level, telling the AP that he is to music what Michael Jordan was to basketball. But it gets better. Said Kanye, "I realize that my place and position in history is that I will go down as the voice of this generation, of this decade. I will be the loudest voice." And it gets even funnier. Kanye says Justin Timberlake had the chance to be the voice of the generation, but he's not putting out enough albums. Justin Timberlake? When Kanye says he'll be the "loudest voice," that's entirely possibly, if shameless self-promotion is what he's referring to. Of course, even there he'd have to take a back seat to Madonna. If I'm going to look up to anyone in music, and I'm not much on hero worship, I'd choose someone who's shown a high level of social consciousness, such as Peter Gabriel or Bono. It's not going to be the person who shouts the loudest about how great he is. And, really, there hasn't been a "voice of the generation" since Dylan in the 1960s. Just keep putting out those CDs, Kanye. They're great. But the rest of us will decide where you belong in the hierarchy of modern culture.

I love me some Kanye... but "voice of a generation?" I dunno... I hope that my generation's voice would have something more to say than "I ain't sayin' she's a gold digga... but she ain't messin' wit no broke n***a's"

Oh... and Jordan won stuff

As far as I'm concerned, the only thing Kanye West does well is piss and moan about not getting the attention he thinks he deserves. He's the personification of narcissism. And he's an ass. Thirty years from now, he'll be nothing but a footnote on this era's music. He'll most likely be forever immortalized as an answer to a trivia question: what musical artist bitched the most after not getting an MTV award?

Yeah, Jordan won stuff. That's because he has TALENT.

Kanye West may think he will go down as the greatest of his generation, but he undoubtedly is the worst concert act I have ever seen. No no, I didn't actually pay money to see him. But he came to West Virginia University for our FallFest celebration (first day of school) a few years ago. As the garbage spewed from his mouth, I wondered, 'Who is this joker and why is he so popular?'

And then it happened. The moment of silence was unmistakable ... He forgot the words to his own song. Nuff said. Kanye West sucks.

Kind of reminds me of how Daryl Hall told Rolling Stone in 1985 that he and John Oates were to the eighties what the Beatles were to the 1960s. Sometimes, after a couple of hits, some musicians get a pretty inflated sense of their own importance.

And when audiences are as splintered as they are now, it would be next to impossible for anyone to be the "voice of their generation," even if they possessed Dylan-size talent.

Yeah, get a bunch of fortysomethings together in a room and they'll immediately start reminiscing about where they were when they first saw the "Maneater" video on MTV.

Martha Quinn, where are you now?

I think Kanye West is the next Porter Waggoner to the 1990s decade of country music rap artists.
