Why do you think they call him dope?

It would be tempting to call U.S. Rep. Paul Broun the village idiot of Congress, but there's way too much competition to make so bold a statement. Let's just say that Broun, a Georgia Republican, is staking a strong claim to the dunce cap. The nitwit told the AP on Monday that he fears President-elect Obama will set up a Gestapo-like security force in order to impose a Marxist dictatorship. I'm not kidding. The jackass really said that. "It may sound a bit crazy and off base," said Broun. OK, we're in agreement so far. "But the thing is," he continued, "(Obama's) the one who proposed this national security force. I'm just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may - may not, I hope not - but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism." What the dingbat is talking about is a speech Obama made in July in which he called for a civilian force to take some of the national security burden from the shoulders of the military. "That's exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany, and it's exactly what the Soviet Union did," said defender-of-freedom Broun. In his speech, which was centered on expanding the nation's foreign service, Obama said, "We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded." The president-elect's transition team declined to comment on Broun's comments. (How do you respond to someone whose tinfoil hat apparently is malfunctioning, allowing those annoying communications from aliens?) But Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor (Does that name sound foreign to you? German?) said the president-elect was referring to a proposal for a civilian reserve corps that could address postwar construction projects such as rebuilding infrastructure. As the AP notes, it's an idea that has been endorsed by the Bush administration. Broun the Loon also noted that he expects Obama to attempt to ban gun ownership if he gets that security force up and running. "You have to remember that Adolf Hitler was elected in a democratic Germany," said Broun. "I'm not comparing (Obama) to Adolf Hitler. What I'm saying is there is the potential of going down that road." This probably plays well with some of Broun's home folks. You know, the ones who like to dress up in pointy hats and burn stuff in open fields. But I'm going to read between the lines, and I think what Mr. Broun really is saying is that he desperately needs some mental-health attention. I know a cry for help when I hear one. Somebody, anybody, please get Rep. Broun some meds and a jacket with really long sleeves.

Sounds like the kind of guy the Weekly Recorder crowd would love.

Is Obama a socialist or a facist? I'm having trouble keeping it straight. Regardless, I'm happy we have someone like Broun in Congress. If anyone can protect the precious bodily fluids of the American people, it's Broun.

Yes, Mr. Hundt, the Weekly Recorder that exposed Pettit, the Amwell Water Authority problems, Friendly Folks amongst others. While the O-R continued to look the other way, drink at the Union Grill with the racketeers and write supportive statements for Pettit. Give it a break.
The Weekly Recorder also exposed the writer of the Westcott letter should I go on, or let your crappy self serving statement stand for itself.

I thought that guy down the bar from me the last time I was at the Union Grill looked like a racketeer. I think maybe it was Rafael Nadal.

Yeah, the last time I ate at the Union Grill it was with a W&J professor. Little did I know...

C'mon, the Weekly Recorder has never been shy when it comes to publishing far-right, paranoid rants -- global warming is a liberal conspiracy, Social Security is immoral, Islam is evil, Democrats are Marxists, etc. It's modern-day John Birch Society stuff. I keep waiting for the column on the evils of fluoridated water.

Did someone mention global warming? Oh, you really must consider buying a nifty 100 percent organic cotton tote bag, available on Oprah’s site, for your purchases while you shop at trendy boutiques. It’s stylish, holds lots of purchases, and will help combat climate change. Save the polar bears who have to swim eight miles to find an ice floe! Save the three-toed sloths! Our planet cannot take much more abuse!

Mr. Hundt, if you believe that the purpose of the Weekly Recorder was to generally write about the issues that you pointed out, then I guess you missed the point of the publication. As usual, you dodge the issues that actually the paper points out. Mainly the ones that deal with the corruption that is so evident in Washington County and at the courthouse.
Yes, Brant there is racketeering at the Grill and as usual it is poo poo to avoid the problem that faces this community. There are lives at stake from the drugs and corruption. Our community has been dying for years.
Are you really denying the racketeering connection with the Grill? Of course it as always shows where your publication is when it comes to corruption.

What is really funny about the socialist remark is this: a $700 billion, ahem, rescue plan of the finance industry, a multi-billion dollar plan to save AIG, possible billions more in the bailout of the automakers on the table. . .

all during the Bush presidency.

How much more of a socialist could Obama be?

Who undermined the US economy by pushing the banking system into a sinkhole of bad loans? The Clinton Administration strong armed banks into giving loans to minorities and the poor who were bad credit risks. Financial disaster resulted. Was this all Bush’s fault?

Did it really take THAT long for things to come to a head? The housing/credit/banking industry didn't collapse under the enron scandal, it didn't collapse under the economic turmoil of 9/11, it didn't collapse when thousands of Americans died in war... it collapsed at the somewhat random time of 2008...

Remember, the clinton years were marked by progressively lower unemployment and rising wages. Bush has had relatively low unemployment with stagnant wages... for some reason, people could afford their house under clinton (maybe because their incomes were going up)... but really... if the clinton administration were to blame for forcing banks to make loans to people who couldn't afford them... and THAT caused this problem... it would have taken fewer than 8 years to happen.

If I buy something I can't afford... I know about it much sooner than 8 years down the road.

It was a combination of factors, the forcing of bad loans, the desire of Americans to use their homes as ATMS to fund their lives, the easy credit that was extended to those that could not afford that size home, the inability of common Americans to realize that everyone should not own a $400,000 home and so on.

The banking industry should be allowed to collapse because of its greed and stupidity in this mess. It won't because it affects too many other people.

When I applied for my first mortgage, I had to give a detailed account of my banking and credit history and promise my first born if I missed a payment. In this mess, these Jack@sses weren't even asking if you were employed.

Someone should go to jail.

I find it interesting that the "anonymous" Weekly Recorder cheerleader wants to steer the discussion to the O-R and local restaurants rather than talk about the crackpot opinions that have been expressed in that paper.

And what's this business about "give it a break"? If the Weekly Recorder believes that global warming is a conspiracy cooked up by liberals (and, I suppose, hundreds of scientists), that Grandma should send back her Social Security check, etc., then defend those views. Don't throw a tantrum.

I'm sure that if only white people who had money were given loans, things would be just great.

And who strongarmed the banks into giving loans to people without requiring proof of assets or income?

Wow...I've been away from Washington County far too long. When did the Weekly Recorder become a publication of note? The last time I read it, it was filled with things like, "Cora Flanders was a dinner guest at the home of the Stewart family. Pie was served for dessert and all had a wonderful time. They plan to dine together again as soon as someone bakes another pie." And then there was the Gashel's grocery store ad and something announcing that Curtis Pharmacy completed its monopoly of local businesses by adding a Hyundai dealership behind the retirement home.
