What a boob

Because my parents and my youngest brother live in South Carolina, I try to believe that it's not a state filled with crackpots and buffoons, despite behavior to the contrary by public officials down there. Gov. Mark Sanford has been under the hottest spotlight of late, what with his gallivanting around with a mistress while his aides claimed he was on a hiking trip. He must have been somewhat relieved when, during President Obama's health-care speech last night, Republican Rep. Joe Wilson wrested away his title as biggest idiot from the Palmetto State. If you haven't heard, when Obama was noting that health-care reform would not lead to spending of public money on care for illegal immigrants, Wilson shouted out, "You lie!" Politicans on both sides of the aisle condemned Wilson for his embarrassing action, and Wilson later called the White House to apologize. But in an atmosphere in which a recent candidate for vice president can lie about "death panels” and talk radio-fueled imbeciles try to shout down a handicapped woman at a town hall meeting, is it any surprise that public discourse has come to this? Oh, by the way, Wilson (no surprise here) didn't know what he was talking about. There's no move afoot to use public funds to finance health care for illegal immigrants. In fact, current legislation in the House would expressly prohibit it. And Wilson’s intemperate behavior might come back to haunt him at the ballot box. His Democratic opponent in next year's election raised $200,000 following the outburst.

It is a shame that civility in general seems to have disappeared from every facet of life. Obama makes me very nervous on so many fronts and I don't agree with much of his politics but, he is still the President of our county and arguably the leader of the free world. As such, he deserves every bit of our respect. I disagree with just about all his stands on key issues, but he was elected by the people of our great nation and I will always have respect for him and his office. There are appropriate ways to make your opinions heard, but to shout out, "Your lie" redefines ignorance and the complete absence of class.

This idiotic outburst is a great example of the coarsening of our society; manners are dying a quick death.

I hate Obama, his entire administration, his czars and everything he represents. However, he is the president, and I'm old enough to remember a time when that meant something, that whether or not you liked the man, you still respected the office, his position in the world and the power he wielded. There was decorum. That's been gone for a while, and that buffoon Wilson only exacerbated the decline of polite society with his rude, no-class comment.

Speaking of South Carolina and its "boobs," when we visited DC in the spring, my son snapped a picture of the SC flag in a row with all the other state flags...but it was flying upside down! A sign of distress indeed.

Maybe Joe Wilson is a fan of the raucous "Prime Minister's Questions" sessions from the British House of Commons (it airs on C-Span every Sunday night at 9) and he decided, what the hell, it's time to bring that spirit to the joint session of Congress!

He's a doofus, no doubt. On MSNBC last night, Lawrence O'Donnell said he talked to someone who went to law school with Joe Wilson, and "idiot" was about the kindest word he used to describe him.

By the way, the best professor I had as an undergraduate now teaches at Clemson, so, yeah, there are a few reasonably intelligent people in South Carolina.

astingFrankly, I like to look at British parliament as a good model. In the United States, a Democrat will come to the podium and lie, and no one will call her on it,. Then, a Republican will come up to the podium and lie, and no one will call her on it. It's all too civil and sterile. Both parties have this nice gentlemanly situation that lets both sides stick around and get re-elected. In the UK, when someone says something controversial, the other side'll stand up and start to boo, cat call, etc. THAT is true Democracy in action. You can say what you want, and I can reply and call you an idiot for thinking that. We saw that when Bostonians tarred and feathered the King's Tax Collectors, we saw that in the anti-Viet Nam War protests, we're seeing this now in the Town Halls. Americans are traditionally loud mouthed angry protestors. It's the civility based protests that are a new creation.

That boob collected $750g's in 48 hrs. Nothing to sneeze at!

Obama was right, he won't cover the illegals under Obama-care. He will grant them all citizenship first! Then cover them.

Obama said he wanted to change this nation. I hope your ready for the new look, it's called Zimbabwe! Don't worry, people are catching on to the left right game. The great hard working people of this nation will remember and tell stories of a great Republic once known as the United States of America to their kids. It might resonate in one childs mind. He or she might have the spin to undo all the mess both sides has done.

all the news that poured out this week and you come up with calling a man a name!? Really?

You could have said something about Obama going to hold talks with a nation that defies international laws, supports our enemy in killing our troops. Do you think he is going to demand Iran to stop? I think he will take a knee and apologise.

You could have wrote about Van Jones. Yet nothing out of your blog or the paper you work for.

You could have wrote about ACORN. Yet nothing.

There is one little thing that makes me laugh. The left wing, says the right wing doesn' have any leadership. I think that is racist! How can you over look Steele? What is funny, with Obama doing such a banged up job in the White House, as his numbers slip faster then Ted Kennedys last drop of drool off the whiskey jug. Sarah Palin could take over for Steele and the right wingers wouldn't have a problem. I wish Ron Paul would step up to the plate and get his name out there now!

I agree anon, but unfortunately they would've been branded as Al Qaeda that hated America. Sadly, they would've been right...

As for Anon2... there were not 2 million teabaggers in DC on Saturday. You can try as hard as you might, but your movement just isn't that strong. You are the vocal few, but the votes are not in your favorite. 20,000 protesters??? are hardly a movement.

I thought you were a NEWS paper.
Where was the story about the TEA
Party yesterday? You ought to be ashamed of yourselves. The American people who do care what happens in our country are ignored. Maybe you do not agree with them but you are STlLL a NEWS paper. When are you going to live up to that?
Explain yourselves.

More hilarious links about the Teabaggers. As usual with this crowd, if they don't like reality, they just make it up!

And check out the signs some of these people brought to their rally. My personal favorite is Obama waving to Al Qaeda and telling them he'll pick up the terrorism from here.

I realize the legitimacy of this administration is hard for a lot of you to accept, but Barack Obama received nearly 69 million votes... more than any U.S. president in history. It's time to come to terms with this reality.

Anonymous, I'm going to surprise you here. Basically, I agree with you. While I don't think the story warranted front-page play, based on a comparison with the stories that WERE used on the front, the story about the rally, in my opinion, was a better story than nearly all of the ones that were used on the inside pages of the A section of the paper. I would remind you, however, that we have covered past tea party activities here at home.

Jeez -- if they yelled "You Lie!" every time someone in the Congress lied, they'd REALLY never get anything done.

Nothing on Van Jones? Nothing on Acorn?

Drudge did post a link that said 2 million and msnbc reported a sea of people from the capitol to the white house. I wasn't there to count them all. I'm sure ABC, CBS, and NBC said 500 people showed up. As talk radio reported everyone in America was there. You know, the numbers game! It another left right trick they play.

Sixty-eight percent of Americans think Rep. Joe Wilson was wrong for yelling at the president during his speech last week, according to Gallup. Only 21 percent supported him and 11 percent had no opinion. It seems like the support of the teabag movement is over-inflated.

MJ. . .the question was do republicans think the outburst of Joe Wilson was wrong. Most people would agree it was wrong. If you ask them do you think his opinion of Obama is wrong, you might get a different response. Just a thought.
