Dumb + ass = dumbass
I've never gotten the impression that James Harrison would be a likely target if one were looking for a person with whom to have an intelligent conversation, but the Steelers linebacker took stupidity to a new low over the weekend when asked about the team's upcoming trip to the White House to be honored for its Super Bowl victory earlier this year. It seems James is passing on the event. His reasoning? James says that if the president really wants to see the Pittsburgh Steelers, he should invite them in a year when they DIDN'T win the Super Bowl, not just because they won a championship. He went on to say that if Arizona had won the Super Bowl, the president would've invited THEM to the White House. Duh! Perhaps James has been living under a rock, but it has been a tradition for many years for the president to invite championship-winning college and pro teams to be honored at the White House. Note the word "honored." It's an honor, James. And, yes, it's for winners. Like the Steelers this year. I'm beginning to think James suffered some sort of lasting brain damage from the incident last year when he allegedly busted down a bedroom door to smack his baby's mama. That, or maybe he's just really dumb, or a major league horse's ass. Or both.

When I first heard this, I had the same reaction as you. But then I read an analysis that changed my mind. It kind of went: This is America, just because the president invites you, doesn't mean you have to come. You can if you wish, but you aren't obligated to.
And I like that message - no matter who the president is.
That would be a GREAT exercise of personal sovereignty... if it weren't accompanied by the explanation that "he's only inviting us because we won."
No shiggity sherlock.
This seems kinda strange to me...It would be one thing if he sat it out to make some sort of political statement, but this just seems like...nonsense.
By his reasoning, Obama should have invited the Detroit Lions to the White House because they lost every game last year.

I'm hardly a fan of Obama (or his camera-whore wife), but Harrison's comments were idiotic. Of course, we ARE talking about a linebacker who hits women. Ahem...allegedly.
Maybe it's better that we don't have a woman beater visiting the White House. Does he really deserve a chance to meet the president? I don't think he does. But then again, I don't think he deserves to be making millions of dollars. But he is.
The man is paid to make legendary touchdowns in the super bowl, not intelligent statements. I'll take his 16 sacks and ridiculous comments every day of the week.
As a Pix-burgh Steeler, James Harrison is great linebacker. As an intelligent human being, James Harrison is a great linebacker.
Why beat on James Harrison? He doesn't have to like Obama or go the White House just because he was invited. I really do not care for the mans view of
America. I wouldn't walk across the street to see him, let alone travel to the White House.
Even if he didn't like Obama's politics, that's not a good reason NOT to go to the White House. It's an honor, no matter who is in office. But that's NOT his reason, and his reasoning makes him look like a D-bag.
true it's his perogative, but at the same time, just shows bad form. i would go just for the experience.
James didn't go to the White House the last time we won the Super Bowl so I guess he is being consistent. I just think is comment was stupid. I don't care if you like Obama or not or if you liked Bush or not. They are and were presidents and it is just for the experience and the opportunity to share stories with your children and grandchildren about meeting a president or presidents.
I don't think it's about politics. I read that he didn't go to the White House when Bush invited the Steelers either.
You better be careful Brant, James might be able to read, and he might stumble across your blog. Then you might be in line for a good ol’ fashioned a** whooping.
It's clearly NOT political... that would require the ability to think through various possible solutions to complex problems and to understand ideology... not only introspectively, but from an empathetic perspective as well.
I think that the republican challenger in 2012 should run on the issue of "Inviting James Harrison to the White House in a year when the Steelers Don't Win the Super Bowl."
This is nothing more that James Harrison putting himself in the spotlight. How did the press learn of his White House boycott? I think James wanted the controversy and probably had one of his henchmen notify the press. Let's keep all the attention on James Harrison-------what a complete a-hole.
You have to understand James. Sometimes he says things for the shock value.
Knowing him, he may not want to miss a workout or has a family obligation.
He's a different guy, but he's most certainly not an idiot.
More is being made of this than should be.
As previous posters said, he didn't attend the last time they were invited. Nothing was said about it then. He's being consistent.
There's not much going on with the team right now and guys are scrapping for stories.
I agree with you, Dale. I think the media is taking his quote out of context, actually. ESPN Radio played the ENTIRE interview last night and he clearly was joking. But when you listen to the first portion, he sounded like an idiot. Listen a few more seconds and he explains that he just doesn't want to go. And there's nothing wrong with that.
Darnit Mike :-) Thanks for ruining a prime chance to make fun of a guy who
a) could kill us all with his bare hands... lying down... in another room.
b) smacks women around
It's actually because he doesn't like to fly unless he has to - ie. for a game.
That's the story. He just doesn't want to admit it publicly.
I'm pretty sure that if I'm invited to the White House, and I don't want to fly, I'll hop in a car and brave that treacherous four-and-a-half-hour drive.
Troy Polamalu probably won't be going either, yet nothing is said about it.
It's really not a big deal. He used a bad excuse the other day in trying to be funny.
He didn't go the last time, either.
Maybe Polamalu actually has a good reason. And if he doesn't, he'd at least be smart enough not to sound retarded in an interview.
Uh, Dale, remember when you said James Harrison wasn't an idiot? Hmmmm.
PITTSBURGH (AP) – A pit bull owned by Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison has reportedly attacked the player’s young son, but police, hospital and team officials are releasing little information.
“We’re aware of the situation, but it’s a personal matter for James,” Burt Lauten, spokesman for the Super Bowl champions told The Associated Press. “We won’t be commenting further.”
An unidentified neighbor told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette one of the star player’s three dogs got loose Thursday and attacked the boy, James III. His age was not immediately available.
A Franklin Park police officer warned neighbors “to keep our children inside because (Mr. Harrison’s) dog had bit somebody,” the neighbor told the newspaper.
The dog was removed by an animal control agency.
A Franklin Park police spokeswoman on Friday said police are not commenting because the incident remains under investigation.
Neighbors told the newspaper that a second person also was hurt and that Harrison’s son was taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. A hospital spokesman said the family does not want information released.
Harrison lives about 15 miles north of the city.
In 2006, then-Steelers linebacker Joey Porter was cited by police in Pine Township, another suburb north of Pittsburgh, after two of his dogs got loose and killed a miniature horse on a nearby farm. Northern Regional Police said then that Porter’s dogs were licensed in his hometown of Bakersfield, Calif., but not in Allegheny County.
So when is James Harrison signing with the Dolphins?
