I kinda figured

Meghan McCain, who had an opportunity to get up close and personal with Joe the Plumber during last year's presidential campaign, had this to say about the working Joe who became a central figure in her father's campaign for the White House: "Joe the Plumber – you can quote me – is a dumbass. He should stick to plumbing." McCain, who was speaking to Out Magazine about being a Republican who supports gay marriage, confirmed my general belief about Joe Wurzelbacher, the Toledo man who was used as a prop of sorts in attacks on then-candidate Obama's tax plans. Last fall, it became very clear to anyone with half a brain that Joe had, well, half a brain. That didn't stop some true believers from elevating Joe to a position at the left hand of Palin – with Rush Limbaugh on the right, of course. Joe recently announced that he has decided against running for Congress because God told him not to. If God is micromanaging things to the point that he's offering political advice to Joe the Plumber, then the Big Guy really needs to delegate. Maybe something like this: "Yo, Angel Zedediah, you did such a good job explaining that whole virgin birth thing to Joseph of Nazareth, I'm wondering if you could, as gently as possible, deal with Joseph of Toledo, who thinks he's the second coming of Robert Taft. Just tell him that it's our educated opinion that he'd be better served by concentrating on poop clogs."

Joe Wurzelbacher aka Joe the plumber. Is he a regular Joe or apart of the VAST RIGHT WING CONSPIRACY?

I remember his crime. He ask a carrer politician a question about taxes. OMG! How dare he! Don't point out that the answer he got was a lie. Point out that Joe is just a regular joe. I guess we have forgot that Joe didn't ask to be in the spotlight, he just ended up there. Good or bad, can't change it now.

He asked B.O. the hardest question during his entire compaign. Joe was punished for taking a working mans stance. If the left wing press and media was willing to dig into his past to punish him for asking a hard question, do you think they wouldn't do it to anyone of us? They made an example out of Joe. You better not ask hard questions to left wingers or they will smear you in the press.

Joe wasn't perfect when his past came up but who is? He had a dream of one day working for himself. So he got smeared.

Meghan McCain born October 23,1984. She is twenty five years old. Who cares who she thinks is a dumbass. McCain is currently a blogger! A freaking blogger! I don't think this little girl has ever worked 40 hrs a week in her whole life. I can hear her, " Joe da plumber is such like a dumbass, cause like he didn't have a silver spoon born in his mouth". Give me a break.

When I need help with something I know who I can count on and it wouldn't be any child of any politician.

When my toilet breaks, I'm calling Joe the dumbass to fix it cause i'm pretty sure Meghan doesn't even know how to wipe her own ass.

I think what's more entertaining is the way the right put him up on a platform and portraying him as the "average" american... when, in reality, he's a half-retarded wannabe plumber... If he's a regular Joe, then I'm G.I. Joe.

Chuck, Joe told B.O. that he was going to buy a business that made over 250k a year. His question was under your plan I'm going to get taxed more? If you want to hear the three different answers B.O.
gave him along with a song and dance here you go!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUvwKVvp3-o

I heard B.O. say something about a tax credit, but lately all I hear is about how he is going to raise the taxes on that bracket of people.

Also Chuckie... "you could keep a plumber on waivers". Don't you mean retainer?

Bob.. The McCains tried to use him. Is that the platform you are talking about? Cause if so, that was an epic fail. Joe keeps setting himself up for failure after that.

Meghan McCain calling Joe a dumb ass? Myself, I hear the kettle and the pot talking.

McCain tried to use him, and the loudest blowhards in Right Wing Media acted like he was practically the second coming of Jesus Christ and Ronald Regan's bastard baby. Epic fail? Yup...

I think the answer was pretty clear... Yes, the top marginal tax rate will go up under an obama administration.

I don't fault Joe for being a dumbass, so much as he really can't help himself... But the fact that people still bow to the alter of Plumber is beyond me...

I think I am going to make some Palin/Plumber '12 bumper stickers for sale on cafe press

Anonymous one,

Yes, I meant to say "retainer", but I see you got my point. Now back to Joe the whatever---the man never had the funds available to purchase anything and is not a licensed plumber in the State of Ohio. Joe the Hasbeen had a perfect right to ask the question he did, but his taxes would not have gone up--------the tax increase was for those businesses that made more than $250,000 a year. The owner of the company that Joe was interested in said that the business had never come close to grossing that amount. I hope to never hear about Joe again.

To a lesser degree, you have abc, nbc, cbs and cnn that "leans" left... but isn't nearly as full tilt as MSNBC... similarly, there are a number of publications and local news affiliates that "lean" right... small town newspapers, small market tv stations... those are more likely to lean to the right.

Brant, wait till election time and see who grabs the headlines at the OR. I didn't see anyone stick to investigative journalism over there when the Deweese and Murtha scandals came up. July 17, 2009 at 2:35 PM

I don't see how he was attacked...

The video hits youtube, Hannity gets a freedom boner, "spread the wealth around" becomes akin to "I'm going to eat 3 aborted babies every day in the oval office," and then the media reports that Joe the Plumber:
a) isn't named Joe
b) isn't a real plumber
c) isn't buying a business

Then... some of us (me) did some market research to see if his "concerns" were valid... Turns out that he would probably have benefited from Obama's tax plans whether he made more than 250k or the 40k that he actually made... which means that it was far from a sincere inquiry... No matter his circumstances, no matter obama's policies, he was going to oppose them... Hold on while I find my data to post...

Also, re: Brant's question... I have something to contribute to that, but I want to wait a bit on it.

The question of OR being right or left, the wrong question was asked. More importantly, which stories were chosen to run, which were chosen to be left out. When asking for specific news stories, the point is being missed, at least in part. Just because a story is published doesn't necessarily mean it is right or left, but what stories are being run, which stories are being ignored, is a better indicator of political leanings of a publication.

No, we are not talking about the stories of the traffic accident on Rt 40, but rather those stories having a subjective aspect. These would include stories of politicians, group promotions or events that promote an agenda, etc.

Yes, Cronkite can be scratched, but his legacy lives on through present day media. Some of us remember his signature line, "That's the way it is." Oh well, that is the way through the eyes of Mr. Cronkite. However, too many of us were naive enough to believe "that is the way it is." We didn't have alternative sources to provide a differing viewpoint. Only later did we really understand what was happening.

Mr. Cronkite, the high-profile figure he established, was the most trusted man in American in 1952. See how gullible we were? Perhaps it was the new form of expression of television that led us down the primrose path.

Oh, how times have changed! Or, maybe not so much? What primrose path are we following in 2009?

And again, I would ask the anonymous from a few posts back, where are your specifics? As I've stated before, we've run plenty of stories about the troubles of DeWeese, Murtha and other Dems. As I recall, we broke the story about the Democrat sheriff boozing it up and driving in West Virginia. We don't avoid bad news about Democrats. Cody likes to beat us about the head and neck for not doing enough against Pettit, and while we might not have been willing to rely on rumors and innuendo regarding Pettit, we have duly covered the actual, factual developments and proceedings involving the former DA. It's easy to say a publication has a liberal or conservative bent if you're not going to provide examples.

I'm guessing the majority of people here claiming there is a liberal media have done extensive research on the subject and are prepared to present their data. No? Certainly, Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh researched this while they were pursuing their postsecondary degrees. Since they seem to be the foremost authorities on such issues, they must have the data to prove it. Oh, wait; they don't have enough credits between them to have earned a certificate of completion from a Microsoft Office operator’s course let alone an undergraduate degree.

Perhaps claiming media bias is just an easy way to mask your failures, or in the case of Rush and Glenn, to keep listeners/viewers on board.

Every news outlet filters what it presents to its consumers for the simple reason that there's too much news to include it all.

The bigger question is, what passes for news and who rates its importance? What do we really need to know? Did we need damn near 24/7 coverage of MJ's funeral when so many other, actually important, stories were available. When the Virginia Tech shootings occurred a few years ago, they grabbed all the headlines. Meanwhile, almost 200 Iraqis had been blown up the same day. No one seemed to care that the coverage was slight.

More than ever before, news is available daily from hundreds of sources. If you choose to get all your news from one outlet, and especially a local outlet, shame on you. If the leanings of a particular newspaper, TV station or radio station offend or rile you, don't read, watch or listen. Find a new source that agrees with you.

The current recession started in December 2007... a fact that wasn't mathematically realized until nearly a year later...

That means that the democratic congress had to be able to do something in their first 11 months to cause a recession.

Also, it was last year... in a time of rising unemployment and decreasing economic activity, that gas achieved record prices... that suggests that the price of gas is not purely a supply-demand issue... nor is it an accurate barometer of the economy... especially in light of the fact that at the height of the clinton bull market, I can recall filling my tank for 93 cents a gallon, occasionally.

Sir, whatever you are smoking, I'll have some.

Unless you're stating that it's an oil speculaton market. If so, Everyone with ties to Goldman Sachs should be thrown in jail.

I wonder why Dems never take responsibility for anything? President Clinton and Barney Frank are the reason for the housing market collapse. They forced Fannie and Freddy to take huge risk in the sub prime mortgage. Some people are meant to rent, others with good credit can buy homes.

Everytime we have a supply and demand issue with oil, the dems block the drilling efforts. Try to get a dem to build a new refinery.

Dems are the kids in the back of the class room that run into the brick wall face first, then never make a left or right. They just run into the brick wall over and over and over again. I say good for SW PA. Lets keep Deweese in office, keep Murth in office... we like watching the youth move away. We like watching our State workers line up for food stamps. We like pain in SW PA. Blogger Ellipses said...

I think the data absolutely shows that it's not purely supply and demand... is the world driving half as much now as it was last summer?

Of course not.

Yet, the price of gas is half.

It absolutely was driven by speculation in commodities markets. Oil "futures" were driven up to unreasonably high levels on speculation. Why? Because under old short-selling rules, you could make a shit-ton of money if the price went up... and you could make a shit-ton of money if the price went down. Why wouldn't you bid the price up? Especially if you could buy a hedge against just about any retraction in the commodities future price?

Unemployment is at about 10%... which means that 90% of us still have our jobs, still drive to work every day, still go to the store, still take the kids to practice and camp and everything else... When gas was 5 bucks a gallon (last summer), about 6% of us were out of a job... so either the price of gas was based on speculation, or 4% of us use a hell of a lot of gas.

I am not a huge fan of how the "back" pages are laid out... you have a page within a page...

If I click local news, and then use the scroll wheel on my mouse, it will scroll down to the bottom of the "bigger" page... but then you have a scrollable page inside of that... so to see the links that are below the bottom of the plane of that box, I have to move my mouse into that space and scroll again...

Sounds ridiculous to complain about having to move your mouse 1 inch and then flick your finger... but it is a bit annoying

I'm not a big fan of the page within a page, either. The interior scrollable obit page especially annoys me, because I'll be working my way down through the obits, then the page refreshes, and I have to do it all again. But, of course, I'm easily annoyed.

Joe the Plumber isn't overly educated, but what he was trying to tell us is the truth.

Do you realize that when the Bush's tax cuts expire, Obama is not going to renew them. So what that essentially means is that big BO isn't going to be raizing your taxes, he is simply not going to renew the Bush's cuts which helps the middle income person. So Joe the Plumber was telling you the truth, that BO is going to be taking more of your tax dollars and giving them away to the poor, IE "sharing the wealth." The working man, not just the rich, are going to taxed more, thus reducing disposable income. Cleaver huh?

I say, create work camps for all the unemployeed people receiving generational welfare. Let them work for their money like the rest of us, and increase their taxes also.

I was so excited when BO talked about taking from the rich and giving to the rest of us. Until my wife pointed out that the rich are smart. They are not going to loose money. That they will figure a way a keep the playing fields exacally the way they are. So, don't get your hopes up too high..

But thanks for the warning Joe the Plumber!! There are simply too many people looking for hand-outs, so BO got elected anyway.

That McCain Chick is smokin' hot. Thanks for the pic.

The total potential federal government support could reach up to $23.7 trillion," says Neil Barofsky, the special inspector general for the Troubled Asset Relief Program, in a new report obtained Monday by ABC News on the government's efforts to fix the financial system.Yes, $23.7 trillion

I think the world GDP for a year is 75 Trillion. So it would take a 1/3 of the worlds GDP for one year to pay this off. It took B.O. 6 mths to spend it. LOL EPIC FAIL! B.O's new nickname is Summers Eve.

Don't blog about other douche bags unless you get the king of douche bags first.

LOL, cap and trade, healthcare.. Summers Eve has failed in 6 mths.

Best question, if the healthcare that Summers Eve wants to put you on is so good, why doesn't congress and him have to be on it?

Holy shit, an ignorant outside observer might think, what is so deadly that a media figure like Beck is, in essence, telling people to buy guns now?

And the answer is a slight raise in the marginal tax rate on the wealthy? An attempt to provide health care to uninsured Americans? A legally-elected government in a representative democracy spending money in the way those campaigning said it would be spent? Yes, I know of many people who go to Canada for their health care.

Which brings up a funny situation... health care costs different amounts depending on what state you live in... so why do people keep going to the doctor in the state they live in if it's more expensive? Probably because they don't think "Oh, if I go two states over, it's cheaper."

Similarly, if you live in Spokane, it probably doesn't every occur to you to go to Kamloops.

Brant, being " slow or limited in intellectual or emotional development or academic progress" does not make someone mean, ignorant or prone to flinging profanities on blogs. I am not sure what causes such behavior, but it seems to manifest itself quite a bit on your blog.

Your sentiments are insensitive, juvenile and rather unenlightened.

You throw out the term "retard" as the ultimate insult. Unfortunately you are insulting the wrong people.

I offer my own definition for your consideration:
bigot - One who is strongly partial to one's own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ.

Please consider how others might feel about the hateful insults of you and your "group". Your insensitivity attacks an entire group of people.

I have no use for the profanity in anyone's posts, and this blog seems to attract and tolerate plenty of it, but do not blame it on the "retards".

Dave, just for clarification, I did not call people "retards." I don't think anyone here has ever seen me use that word. I said they were retarded, referring to the part of the definition that speaks of people who are "limited in intellectual or emotional development." That's in no way an epithet or a slap at people who are born with disabilities. The people I am referring to had the capability to raise the level of their discourse, but chose not to because of their own insecurities and prejudices. The term retarded is listed as "sometimes offensive." But, of course, pretty much everything in our politically correct society is considered offensive these days. And, yes, there are some bigots on the blog, and in society in general. We see evidence of it every day.

"Best healthcare in the world" doesn't really mean dick to those who can't afford it...

Ferrari's are pretty awesome driving machines... but a lot of people settle for Hondas...

I'd rather have Honda Health Care than Ferrari Health Care.

I would give up the multitudes of boner pills and sleeping pills for the ability to keep my house after getting treated for falling off a ladder... But, to each his own

Your 'sky is falling' approach to this argument is silly. Here in America everyone has access to Ferrari health care. If you don;t have insurance you are billed after the fact. If you need care that isn't covered you sell your house or rally around your neighbors, you see it every day. Government isn't the answer. No one has ever lost his house because he fell off a ladder, it just doesn't happen. Life happens and people have catastrophes. That doens't mean I should have to pay for them or others pay for me.
Keep goverment out of my uterus.

Does anyone else want to dig up the stats on the relationship between medical expenses, personal bankruptcies, and foreclosures?

I'm kinda in the middle of a work thing right now...

The figures aren't relevant. I think this sums it up...

'Life happens and people have catastrophes. That doens't mean I should have to pay for them or others pay for me.'

I don't think that breaking your foot qualifies as a catastrophe... yet, if an uninsured person breaks their foot, they could very well incur medical bills that would cause them to lose their house.

I have absolutely NO problem paying a little more in taxes so that people I don't know don't have their lives completely ruined by catastrophes. If you want to be 100% self reliant, go live in the woods.

LISTEN E, THERE IS A THING CALLED A HOSPITAL LIEN, THEY CAN'T TAKE YOUR HOUSE, OR EVEN CLAIM A LIEN POSITION. SO YOUR STATEMENTS ARE FALSE. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES CAN YOU LOSE YOUR HOUSE BECAUSE OF A HOSPITAL LIEN.

Really? And how is that hospital lien thing working out?

"Half of foreclosures due to medical expenses"
http://allnurses.com/social-health-care/half-foreclosures-attributable-406604.html

"Half of foreclosures due to medical expenses"
http://www.ourfuture.org/fast-fact/2008104001/medical-bills-lack-healthcare-responsible-many-home-foreclosures

"49% of foreclosures due to medical expenses"
http://works.bepress.com/christopher_robertson/2/

"49% of foreclosures due to medical costs"
http://www.pnhp.org/blog/2008/10/06/medical-causes-of-home-mortgage-foreclosures/

There were over 3 million foreclosures in 2008. 49% of them had a medical issue at it's core. "Unmanageable medical bills" accounted for 23% of Medical-related foreclosures. So, 49% of 3 million = 1,470,000 "Medical-related foreclosures"

23% of 1,470,000 = 338,100 people that lost their house specifically because of "unmanageable medical expenses."

But now we have a problem... you said "UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES CAN YOU LOSE YOUR HOUSE BECAUSE OF A HOSPITAL LIEN." And yet, apparently, there were 1/3 of a million people who lost their house last year due to expenses incurred due to a medical issue. Did they have a hospital lien? I don't know... but we do know that a) they got sick
b) they racked up a lot of medical bills
c) they had their house foreclosed upon

You are welcome.

No response to the fact that I was, yet again, CORRECT?

Come on, now... you (anonymous) made an objective claim to something and I refuted it handily... and then... silence.

Come on now...

My list is accurate, and believe me, there will be more to come. We started to lose our freedoms, starting with the cigarettes and that was a while ago.

Good luck getting people to rally around cigarettes. Remind me to tell you why your list is inaccurate tomorrow. I need to sleep. L8r
