To carry, or not to carry?

Someone suggested on the last blog post that it’s time for a fresh subject. So how about something non-controversial like gun control? The U.S. Senate today narrowly defeated an amendment to a defense-spending bill that would have allowed a person with a permit from one state to carry a concealed weapon to carry that weapon in any other state. I’m generally of a mind that most gun-control measures, such as the silly Pittsburgh law requiring a person to report the theft or loss of a handgun, are worthless, but I can see some sense in the arguments of the people on both sides of the gun permit debate. On one hand, if a person is deemed worthy of being able to carry a concealed gun in Texas, why should that change if the person drives over the border into Oklahoma? But at the same time, there’s some merit to the position of opponents who note that in some states, getting the OK to carry a concealed gun is about as easy as ordering a Big Mac at McDonald’s. What are your thoughts?

Carry! If you are not a crazy person or a felon, I think you should be able to carry if you want.

Places that have band handguns have a higher crime rates, and only the criminals are armed. Doesn't sound safe to me. I try to stay away from those places like Chicago and DC.

The opposite to that is to arm the public, which is fine. One place did that. Kennesaw Ga, guess what they have almost no crime. I think the cheif of police told every head of the household to buy and maintain a gun. I think he even got it to pass as a town law! I bet people in town are friendly as hell too.

Although Poplawski might not have been adjudicated mentally ill prior to the shootings, it's pretty clear he had mental problems, and those problems were fed by the looney tunes who go around raving that the government is coming to round up everyone's guns. Reports indicated that the Marines said he was kicked out of the corps because of a psychological disorder. But all the gun laws in the world cannot stop a person who is motivated to do harm from getting his or her hands on a weapon. It's much like the so-called war on drugs. You can throw all kinds of money and manpower at the problem, but it just doesn't work.

I don't think the question is the govt coming to get your guns, but how much they can nibble away at the 2nd amendment.

The govt will never come out and say disarm the public. They have to do it behind closed doors. Take this type of bullet away, can't have a clip that holds more then 20 bullets. If you have a civial war musket with an effigy of Charles Heston on it and he was in uniform, you can't say moses told you to do that drive by.

We have the 2nd admendment cause without it there wouldn't have been an United States of America.
It was the militia that saved George Washington. The regular Army just didn't have enough guns or troops. Washington knew if the public was armed, their would be little chance of tyranny again in America.

I gotto go, I hear a little black helicopters, I think that is B.O. and Eric holder wanting my musket.

A few points about about allowing people to carry guns.

1. If it is such a protective measure, then show me how many crimes have been averted by gun-carrying civilians. Never seen any numbers on that, anywhere.

2. If it is so difficult to determiine who is crazy in our society, why would we want to make it easier for someone like the Va. Tech mass murderer to get a weapon? Would licensed guncarriers be allowed to bring weapons onto school grounds, into churches, to ballgames?

3. If police are called to a place where a gun battle is taking place, how do they determine who the bad guy is if everyone is firing a weapon? Who do they shoot or not shoot?

BTW, the reason there are so few affective gun laws is because of the NRA's lobbying ability to make these laws ineffective before they even reach a vote.

How come everyone forgets that the whole "right to bear arms" bit in the Constitution was at a time when a well-regulated militia was necessary? When was the last time one of your neighbors was scalped, or forced to house a British soldier?

For the "anon" that brought up the VA Tech shooter. He killed 32 people that day.

2002 at Appalachin University of Law there was a shooting. 3 people died, far from 32. Why? Two students had personal firearms in their cars. They stopped that monster.

Police show up durning a gun battle, best thing for one to do if they don't want to get shot, find cover.. put your weapon down. Don't aim at the police.

Affective gun laws? Are you kidding me? A criminal doesn't care about laws. When you have hangun bans in a city, they only thing you have left is the criminals armed.

For the last "anon". A well-regulated militia is needed as much today as it was 233 years ago.
Ever wonder why we haven't had a major invasion in this country since the 1800's? It would be a suicide mission for any army.

Aren't today's well-regulated militias actually each state's National Guard?

And where is the outrage over the erosion of the Fourth Amendment, which forbids illegal search and seizure. It amazes me that we have this massive debate over gun control and the Second Amendment, but few people care about the government wire-tapping and reading our e-mails without warrants.

MJ, that is a good point. Back then well-regulated militia was the civilian population. There are still civilian regulated militia's out there. I think they are big in Mich,Tx,Ark, and Oklahoma. The ATF looks down on them, tries to smear them at every chance they can. Why you ask? Cause they don't take orders from the Federal Govt.

If you read on the 2nd amendment it also says "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed". Pretty cut and dry there.

4th amendment is under attack. You need to find someone that is in the constiutionalist party and get them to run against Murtha and Deweese. The 1st amendment is under attack also. The bully law they want to pass, if you hurt someones feelings on the internet they can put you in jail. Whatever happen to freedom of speech? I think my house counts as a free speech zone. I think the internet is one of the most powerful tools a free nation can have. I say never regulate the internet in America.

I just want to add something real quick, I'm not a 2nd amendment freak. I do know my grandfather gave my father his first gun, and my father gave me my first gun and I gave my son his first gun. I know people that couldn't live without a gun. They hunt all the time, and in the summer time they fish. Some of the best people I know. So you're telling me that you would not report an attempted assault at, say, a park or on your front porch?

Amazing.

If there aren't any numbers, then it could be that crimes are deterred a thousand times a day by gun-carrying residents, or twice.

As for the Va. case, there was a bill considered in the state legislature to allow professers at colleges to arm themselves. It quickly died. The reason? Crazy people are crazy, not stupid. If the bill passed then the fear was that the first person shot in another one of these incidents would be the professors, because they would likely be armed.

Although I'm not a gun owner, I absolutely believe in the right of our citizens to bear arms. My only question is whether that gives people the right to own assault style weapons that are built for the primary purpose of killing as many people as possible. I've been told by gun enthusiasts that they're fun to shoot, although I wouldn't know. But I definitely agree people should be allowed to keep guns to protect themselves, hunt and collect, but I think there needs to be a limit on the type of weapons that can be purchased.

As for the concealed permit issue... can't people in PA and WVa carry openly on their hip? That guy who went to the Obama rally with his gun was found not guilty because he didn't violate any laws on the books.

So this is an honest question for gun owners out there: Why is there more interest in having a concealed weapon rather than carrying it on your hip? I'm interested in hearing your responses, and you won't get a rebuttal from me.

Because having the gun carried openly creates a scene and there a certain places in which having a gun on your hip would be distasteful. (funeral, wedding, mall). Being able to carry concealed allows you to always carry without creating issues. "CONGRESS SHALL MAKE NO LAW!"

For the record, I believe that national concealment laws are fine. Too many states have varying laws, and ability to travel across state lines with a legally registered firearm without the fear of a differing law would make things much easier.
MJ is correct in one aspect, however. Despite being taboo, you can walk down the street in Pittsburgh,Philadelphia, Allentown, Labtrobe, wherever in Pennsylvania legally with a holstered handgun. If you perceive anything different with his or Brant's agenda, then why not put your name up here as well?

Criminals pick on the elderly, the frail, and women because they are less likely to fight back. You want Granny to pack a .45? Now that's a thought that chills the spine.

the whole issue of "gun control" to me is an oxymoron, so whether you have the right to bare it, conceal it, use it, own it or not, there will always be people that have them, get them illegally, and make their own rules.

everyone has their own experience with and opinions about guns. there's a gun in my house that is not mine, and it makes me uneasy, but that's not because of crimes against others, it's crimes against oneself. I've had 2 people in my life kill themselves, and commit suicide with their own handgun. on legally had his, and the other stole it from a friend. people's opinions form from the environment they were reared in and learned from.

i don't care if ppl carry them. the world takes it course and usually making something illegal just fuels the fires for people to profit from the underground.

See, the problem is, terrorism has no one (or two or three) faces. There is no terrorist Hitler to off himself and his mistress and put an end to the movement. There is no terrorist Mussolini, no terrorist Tojo. So how do we win? drop a couple of nukes like we did in Japan? Nah, because the terrorists want to be martyrs. They'd love it if we killed a couple hundred thousand people.

do you think we scared away terrorists by botching Iraq? I'd say we recruited more than we killed. What has the eight-year hunt for Bin Laden done except turn him into a folk hero? So we supposedly killed his so. He probably loves that -- what great motivation to continue the jihad.

non-conventional war? Dick Cheney was going to handle that the best he could with his CIA hit teams. It was so liberal for someone to turn and tale.

I don't know how you felt about Saddam, myself I would label him as a dictator terrorist. What about his sons? Doesn't matter now, they are gone. Iraq is better for that one reason alone. Only time will tell if we did harm or good there. I can tell you this, if you don't mind a history lesson.

The Iraq war, follow me here was Hitlers fault. How Saddam became the Dictator is a direct result from Hitler and the Dessert Fox. I would love to lay it out for you, but what I do with my kids is make them research stuff on their own, when they read it black and white they tend to remember it better.

I kinda like Colin Powells theory on Iraq. Once you break it, you own it. His problem was, he didn't know who really broke it. I say we kept putting band aids on it since the 40's.

There might be a civial war in Iraq soon. When you have been living under tyranny for so long, and they only thing you have is your religon and it was used against you for 40-50 years you will have civial wars. Saddam pitted the sunni and shia muslims against each other for years. Now they don't want the other one to have power of the oil fields.

You fight a terrorist with terror. Sure, if you kill them you only make them martyrs. I wish the Army would make 500,000 more martyrs. You don't win the war by dying for your country, you win by making the other person die for his.

You know back in Indian days, when two tribes would fight, whoever lost, lost big time. They would kill every man in that tribe. They would do some crazy stuff to the females, and leave some children alive so the story would pass on how ruthless the winnng tribe was. Pure terror.

Korean War. How many of our soldiers did we loose? 50k? How many did they loose? 2 million. Guess who kept their heads down for 40 years? North Korea. Don't worry, I'm sure Obama will appoligize to them too, and they will be good for the next 2 years.

Don't be so liberal and not want to make martyrs. That martyr we just made was going to be a martyr anyway when he found his way to America with a bomb a bus. We just put them in the express lane.

"Atlanta police say former professional boxer Vernon “The Viper” Forrest was killed Saturday night when a robbery turned into a gunfire exchange.

The incident began at the Chevron on Whitehall Street in Southwest Atlanta when Forrest, 38, stopped to put air in the tires of his Jaguar, said Atlanta Police Detective Lt. Keith Meadows.

A male suspect approached Forrest and robbed him of a few items at gunpoint, he said. Forrest, who was also armed, then chased the suspect to an area near McDaniel and Fulton Streets, where the men exchanged gunfire.

Forrest was shot seven to eight times in the back, Meadows said. Meadows said there is evidence Forrest used his weapon but did not know if the suspect was shot."

Of course it makes sense to conserve. Al Gore gets hit because he has guts enough to speak the truth -- even if we don't want to recognize it. Idiots point to a cool summer and say, "there's your proof that there's no global warming." Unfortunately they must have been reading comic books in science class and missed the info about climatic change taking a long time to take effect.

But why should they care? They'll be dead soon, and corpses don't care how hot it is, or how much pollution there is. Do what you can -- drive less, keep your thermostat high or low depending on the season. Don't worry about what the fools say. They're in the same league with those Pomepiians who said Vesuvius wouldn't erupt.

Maybe all these gun toters figure they'll just bust a cap in Global Warming's ass when it arrives.

Al Gore use to call it global warming, now it's climate change. I call it sun cycles and mother nature. Adding taxes to the books isn't going to solve global warming, climate change or the fact that one of the largest producers of pollution is Al Gore! Hell, I think he even past the cows methane gas levels with the bull he spews from his mouth.

3,000 RECORD LOWS FOR THIS JULY.

2nd Admendment, right to bear arms.

No debate here, it's done and over with. Shouldn't even be a topic.

We have had the right for 233 years, don't let the pencil necks in Washington chip away just a little at our rights.

Freedom of Speech, only in free speach zones. People tell me the Tea Parties are bad!! The right to assemble, petition the government. WTF IS GOING ON!?

Freedom to bear arms, shall not be infringed!!! Enter Eric Holder, Bill Clinton.. WTF IS GOING ON!!! You can throw the other dirt bag in there also OBAMA.

Unreasonable searches and seizures! Throw that other dirt bag in there named G.W.Bush! Don't tap my phone!

Alex, I take the 5th! GET TAZED cause the cops just said you didn't help them with their case against you. WTF!

In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial! I know a man that has sat out a year of his life in a county jail for non payment of child support for a child that wasn't his!!!! WTF!

All of our Rights are under attack. Every damn one of them. It's not a RED AMERICA, IT's NOT A BLUE AMERICA. It's not black nor white... left or right. It's America. Don't fall into the game!

There shouldn't be any debate ever over the Bill of Rights.

OK, then tell me this. Does the second amendment mean we have the right to own nuclear weapons? Those are considered arms, right?

What about such things as chemical weapons?

Do you want your neighbor to be able to purchase a tank? bazooka? a laser?

Do you want your 90-year-old grandfather to be able to purchase an Uzi and take your 9-year-old son out to show him how to use it?

We're not just talking about hunting rifles and handguns here. We don't live in Revolutionary Times anymore. We have to adjust and you should be able to see that.

So yes, there is a debate here.

So nuclear weapons should be freely available to anyone who can afford them?

Bob, right to bear arms, not rockets. Even if you had a nuke, what would it do you any good if you didn't have the license to store that amount of rocket fuel.

If we are going to be silly, lets get at it. Make the connection between a firearm and a nuke, or chem weapon. What is the difference between militias and individual?

I do understand those wise gentlemen, understanding that for an armed populace to have any chance of tossing off an oppressive government would indeed need access to arms equal to that available to the government that was oppressing them.

Do I think we need individuals running around with nukes? No. Does our militias need the same weapons as an oppressing government? Yes.

"Arms"- weaponry: weapons considered collectively

Your second point is "the" point... the intent of the founders was for the civilian population to be a formidable check against the power of the state... however, technology has evolved disproportionate to the restraint of the individual. The weapons that are legal for our citizenry to possess would not be sufficient to thwart an invasion by a third world army, let alone offer any resistance to the US military.

Furthermore, we do not have an independent militia that I would trust with a collection of pellet guns, let alone Strykers, F-22's, sidewinders, and nuclear warheads.

Finally, a nuclear weapon does not require a rocket to deliver it. A nuke in a van can be just as effective as a nuke on an ICBM.

So, as a collective society, we have agreed that our right to bear arms gives us the right to bear arms... but it does not give us the right to bear any type of arms... If you ban hand guns, rifles, and muskets... I still have the right to bear arms... but the arms I must bear are shotguns and bows.

:-)

There is a difference between individual and militias. I don't think you will argue about that.

Individuals should be allowed to carry any "firearm".

The militias that are talked about in the 2nd admendment are a civilian militia. The civilian militias we have today have a bad rap, no doubt. Some due to black ops ran by our own fbi, atf, cia and cid. They get in, sell them arms then drugs.. then they come back and bust them. Happens all the time. The difference between those militias and the ones talked about in the 2nd is... a militia can not be selective. They have to take everyone. Pretty smart huh? If you start a town militia, you can't say Brant can't join cause he is a right winger. Kind of a check and balance. So you build your Fort for you militia, you have a rank structure, you follow all the laws, should you be able to store a suitcase nuke? Does that Fort meet all requirements for housing such an item?

I think I would trust a civilian militia with proper checks and blances, rank structure ect.. more then I trust the Federal GOVT.

The part of the 2nd I won't even debated, is my right to bear a firearm. I use to hunt, don't anymore.. but I still and always will have my hunting guns. Best hunting rifle I have is a .22-250! I can dial that in on a ground hog @ 1300 yards! It's dead on @ 1500, my longest kill was 1300.

Wow- I just spent a long time reading all of these entries and I'm astonished that no one brought up the news we learned last week that GW Bush - at Cheney's urging -- had considered sending U.S. troops into Buffalo to arrest some terror suspects.

Cheney apparently asked Bush to do it to prove his assertation that the Bill of Rights is no longer applicable to our daily lives.

Wow - I actually kind of agreed with Cheney about the death squads, at least in theory. Just imagine if a handful of elite forces had wiped out Saddam and his key advisors rather than this boondoggle of a war we find ourselves in?

Nonetheless, can you IMAGINE the outrage that would have ensued if it was Obama that had wanted to send the Army into Buffalo?

I wouldn't wait on the federal gov. to do shit for me. Ever been in a hurricane? Why didn't that Chocolate City Mayor get those people out of there? Did those people get warning for three days on tv? Why didn't they walk out of there? It's the liberal thing to do ... have the federal govt. raise ya from cradle to grave. Don't worry your community organizer is fucking up this country.

I live near Bridgeville, so this is somewhat personal for me. How many more people are going to have to die before we re-evaluate the limits of the Second Amendment.

"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

Doesn't say anything there about a madman being given the resources to shoot up civilians in a fitness center.
